Nutrition & Healthy Cooking

Back to education
Fresh prepared salads ready for families at an HHI nutrition program

Healthy eating is one of the most practical ways HHI helps families prevent and manage chronic disease. Through bilingual workshops, hands-on cooking demonstrations, and real food support from our pantry, Community Health Workers meet people where they are — with recipes, portions, and shopping strategies that fit Central Florida kitchens, budgets, and cultural traditions.

Hands-on cooking demonstrations

Nutrition education at HHI is not only classroom-based. At programs such as the “Buddies” / “Los Amigos” diabetes education forum, participants receive a nutritious, portion-controlled breakfast and lunch along with live cooking demonstrations — a hands-on way to learn healthier preparation methods for familiar dishes.

Workshops

Culturally rooted nutrition education

HHI offers free, bilingual nutrition workshops developed for our community. Sessions are interactive, practical, and designed to build confidence in everyday food choices.

“Healthy Choices Healthy Life”

“Selección Sana y Vida Saludable”

This two-hour NCLR workshop helps participants strengthen daily habits with healthy nutrition education, smart shopping tips, and easy physical-activity techniques they can use at home.

  • Understanding balanced meals and portion sizes
  • Reading labels and comparing options at the store
  • Simple activity ideas for the whole family
  • Bilingual guidance from trained Community Health Workers

“Shopping Healthy and Smart”

“Comprando Rico y Sano”

A complementary workshop focused on turning nutrition knowledge into action at the grocery store — choosing better foods without giving up the flavors families already love.

  • Selecting nutritious foods on a budget
  • Serving sizes and meal planning basics
  • Building regular physical activity into the week
  • Becoming a more confident, health-conscious shopper
Food Pantry

Healthy food support for families

HHI maintains a food pantry at its DeBary office and, with volunteers, helps distribute food monthly in Volusia County. The pantry provides nutritious food and prepared healthy meals so families can put workshop lessons into practice at home.

Food as part of wellness

Reliable access to healthy food makes it easier to manage diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, and everyday stress. Pantry support is integrated with HHI's education and screening services — not offered in isolation.

How to access support

Families can contact HHI to learn about upcoming distribution dates, pantry hours, and how food support connects with nutrition classes and other free services.
