Essential Tips for Managing Life with Diabetes

Hispanic Health Initiatives · 3 min read

Understand Your Condition

Managing diabetes well can help prevent complications and improve quality of life. Diabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal because the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively.

Knowing your type—Type 1, Type 2, or gestational—helps you tailor care. Regular check-ups are essential to monitor your condition and adjust treatment.

Monitor Blood Sugar Regularly

Tracking glucose helps you understand how food, activity, stress, and medication affect your levels. Use a reliable glucose meter at times recommended by your doctor, and record readings to spot patterns and prevent dangerous highs and lows.

Adopt a Balanced Diet

Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and vegetables. Limit foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates.

  • Choose whole fruits instead of fruit juices
  • Opt for brown rice, quinoa, or whole wheat bread
  • Include healthy fats like nuts, seeds, and olive oil
  • Control portion sizes and plan meals for steady glucose

Stay Active Every Day

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days. Check blood sugar before and after activity, and carry a quick source of sugar in case of hypoglycemia.

Manage Stress, Sleep, and Medications

Stress and poor sleep can raise blood sugar. Take medications as prescribed, keep refills on schedule, and seek support if anxiety or depression affects your care.

Regular Health Check-Ups and Support

Routine visits include blood tests, eye exams, foot checks, and blood pressure monitoring. Connecting with family, friends, or diabetes support groups provides encouragement and practical help.

Conclusion

Small daily choices add up. Pick one area to improve today—whether tracking glucose more closely or adding a short walk.

You are not alone on this journey, and support is available through HHI and your care team.

Experience a Pain-Free Glucose Monitoring Journey with Continuous Glucose Monitors

Introduction to Continuous Glucose Monitors

In the past, people with diabetes had to check their glucose levels by pricking their fingers with a needle several times a day, sometimes even more than 3–4 times. This old-school finger-pricking method was pretty uncomfortable and inconvenient.

Over the last 10 years, Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) have become a game-changing option. If you're curious about this technology, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can switch to a CGM.

How Continuous Glucose Monitors Work

CGMs use sensors applied to the skin rather than finger pricks. These devices provide glucose data every 5 to 15 minutes for real-time monitoring and send readings to a receiver or smartphone for immediate viewing.

Advantages of Using a CGM

  • Pain-free monitoring: eliminates the need to prick fingers multiple times a day
  • Convenience and ease of use: continuous data without manual testing
  • Longevity of sensors: typically functional for 10 to 15 days
  • Real-time alerts: immediate results and alarm settings for high or low glucose

Selection and Prescription Process

There are three major brands—Dexcom, Libre, and Eversense—each with unique features. You will need a doctor's prescription based on your individual needs. Most health insurances, including Medicare Part B, may cover CGMs. Consult your doctor or pharmacist to choose the right device.

Impact on Daily Life and Diabetes Management

By reducing physical discomfort and monitoring-related stress, CGMs can improve quality of life. Continuous data helps maintain better glycemic control and empowers users with a clearer understanding of glucose patterns.

Conclusion

CGMs offer meaningful advantages over traditional finger-prick methods.

Speak with your healthcare provider about CGMs if you're tired of finger pricks.

Technology can make diabetes management easier and less painful.
