Diabetes Education

“Buddies”sm/“Los Amigos”sm is a one day 6 hour comprehensive education class on Diabetes Type II prevention and self-management. This forum presents participants the opportunity to hear from, as well as ask questions of, experts in the fields of:

  • Chronic Disease – Medical Doctors, Endocrinologists, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners
  • Nutrition – Licensed Nutritionists, Dieticians
  • Medications – Pharmacists
  • Physical Fitness – Zumba Instructors, Martial Arts Instructor

As a part of the forum, HHI’s Community Health Workers conduct health screenings for participants, to update their health status. In addition, a nutritious, portion controlled breakfast and lunch is served, with a cooking demonstration to offer a hands on learning approach to healthy eating and cooking habits.

Nutrition Education

“Healthy Choices Healthy Life” / “Seleccion Sana y Vida Saludable”

This 2hr. NCLR workshop offers participants an opportunity to enhance their lifestyle with healthy nutrition education, intelligent shopping tips and easy to do physical activity techniques.

“Shopping Healthy and Smart” / “Comprando Rico y Sano”

Similar but complimentary to the “Healthy Choices Healthy Life” / “Seleccion Sana y Vida Saludable” workshop, the “Shopping Healthy and Smart” / “Comprando Rico y Sano” workshop empowers individuals to live healthier lifestyles by focusing on the importance of its learning objectives: food selection, serving portions, regular physical activity and creating health conscious smart shoppers.

Cancer Education

“My Health In My Hands”/“Mi Salud En Mis Manos”

Breast Self-Examination Demonstrations and Cervical Cancer education for groups of six or more women presented for the public’s convenience, at a place and time of their choosing. Community Health Workers will educate participants on:

  • Who is at risk?
  • What are the risk factors?
  • What are the symptoms?
  • Proper Self-Examination techniques?

“Breast Health Bingo”

An informal and non-threatening game of bingo designed to educate on the importance of early detection of breast cancer, for groups of six or more women presented for the public’s convenience, at a place and time of their choosing. Community Health Workers will:

  • Stress the importance of early detection
  • Discuss risk factors
  • Dispel myths and the fear of cancer, its detection and treatment
